Chapter 40: The Wild Geese Come Home — Irish Whiskey in the Twenty-First Century

When The Wild Geese was launched in 2001, Irish whiskey was a category in recovery. It had been devastated by the temperance movement, American Prohibition, Irish trade wars with Britain, and the commercial dominance of Scotch whisky in the global market. At its lowest point in the 1970s, there were only two distilleries operating in all of Ireland. The entire category ran through a single company.

The revival that followed was not inevitable. It required people who believed in Irish whiskey as something more than a market segment — as a culture, a history, a craft worth preserving.

The Wild Geese was part of that revival from the beginning — a brand that decided from its first day that the story was as important as the liquid in the bottle, that Irish whiskey drinkers deserved to know what they were drinking and where it came from and why it mattered.

The growth that followed came primarily from one source: the scale and marketing power of Jameson, owned by a French conglomerate and named after a Scotsman. The wave of new distilleries that opened in subsequent years had energy and ambition, but most were never financially viable and none has produced a whiskey with the scale to seriously challenge that dominance. The one brand with the awards, the story, and the global reach to have done so — The Wild Geese, with over 75 international awards and distribution across five continents — was stopped.

First by Pernod Ricard refusing supply. Then by Beam, which acquired Cooley Distillery, The Wild Geese’s only independent source, and closed that door too — protecting their own brand, Kilbeggan, from the competition The Wild Geese would have brought.

Two sieges ended. A third is beginning. This time with the full history of the original Wild Geese as the foundation, and their story being told, completely, for the first time.

Pernod Ricard would not be the only major company Andre and Mairade had to contend with. That story is still to come.
