Men of Action: Canyon Kayaking ‘A Once In A Lifetime Opportunity’

Kayaking down the Colorado River, which runs through the Grand Canyon is said to be an exhilarating experience. The 225 miles of ferocious river offers adventurers 150 named rapids and waves that can reach 15ft in height!

It is no surprise that it is difficult to acquire a permit for the Canyon kayak. They are limited, and those wanted to brave the unpredictable waters must enter into a lottery draw. But a group of 15 adventurers from across the UK have been invited to participate in the experience of a lifetime.

‘This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity’ explains Carl Halliday who has been invited along. He teaches students a national Level 3 award in Basic Expedition Leadership at Kirkley Hall. Carl has previously hiked the Himalayas and conquered the Swiss mountain Matterhorn. He’s now up for the next challenge.

‘I was delighted to be invited onto the expedition, which involves an independent team kayaking and rafting the Colorado River in Arizona. The fact that the expedition isn’t guided and is self-sufficient is what really appeals to me’

The expedition is being led by Director of the British Canoe Union Mike Devlin and a former lecturer at Northumberland College, Chris Heaney, who first registered for a permit ten years ago! For some of the group, this really will be the adventure of a lifetime.

‘I’m sure that everyone fortunate enough to be on this trip will do their best to savour every minute’

‘It is experiences like these that keep me and my team on top of our game and keep us passionate about what we do’

Set to take place on June 29th, Carl and the team must now be itching to try what so few have had the opportunity to do.
