The Wild Geese Search for The Ultimate Cafe Creme

The Wild Geese Irish Whiskey Collection launched our first cocktail competition on Monday 12th November!

We invited a selection of London’s top bartenders to The Royal Exchange in London to create the Ultimate Cafe Creme. We had a great turn out with 9 highly skilled barmen from the Square Mile of London. They all brought with them fresh ideas and we loved seeing them engage with the brand so passionately.

To give them some Irish courage, we provided the participants with a sample of each of our multi award winning Irish Whiskeys – the Classic Blend, the Rare Irish, the Limited Edition and the superb Single Malt.

There was a consensus around the room that each whiskey had its own distinct personality, but did share some characteristics: a richer, rounder, smoother flavour. It was exciting to present an independent Irish whiskey.

Each participant then came forward and presented their ideas to a warm crowd that enjoyed hearing different takes on the recipe.

Huge thanks go to all our participants, but specifically to the panel of judges who chose the winning recipes:

  • Neil Davey representing Square Mile Magazine
  • Louise Corbin from BarChic.com
  • Martin Bell who has been working with the brand during its UK launch

Our fabulous judges decided the winner based on taste, presentation and replicability.

The Winning Cocktail came from Tim from Hawksmoor:

35ml The Wild Geese Classic Blend
15ml Clove Chocolate Bittet Syrup
Double shot Climpsons Irish Coffee
Cream shaken with 2 dashes Angostura Bitter
1 dash Maraschino

Add The Wild Geese Classic Blend, clove syrup, coffee and a dash of hot water (20ml) all poured into a milk pitcher and gently heated with a steam wand from the coffee machine, until the pitcher had become too hot to hold.

Then pour the contents into a warm glass. Top with cream shaken with 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash Maraschino. Enjoy!

Tim showed his extensive knowledge in his presentation. His Ultimate Cafe Creme was a beautiful recipe in its simplicity. His mixture let the flavours do the talking, and complimented our Classic Blend perfectly. Proving that our whiskey is versatile and very engaging.

Here are some of the other participants – each brought a really special spin to the competition!

Thank you to all our competitors and The Royal Exchange for providing the venue.

Extra special thanks go to the judges and Square Mile magazine and The Drink Shop for helping run the competition.

“The Wild Geese é straordinario!”

Each year, our Italian distributors – Gruppo Meregalli – host ’100 Vini’, a prestigious event where they showcase their finest products. Earlier this week we returned to the event with our multi award winning Irish Whiskey Collection.

We’ve had a lot of positive interest from Italy over the past few months and it was really great to meet some of Meregalli’s clients and spread the word of The Wild Geese.

“Questa é una bella sorpresa”

Visitors got the chance to really engage with the product, from tasting The Collection to exploring the brand story on the back label, and some even shared their thoughts when they tried The Wild Geese:

100 Vini took place at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, which hosts the F1 Italian Grand Prix. We were treated to some warm up laps from F1 racing cars in the morning, before guests were invited to the viewing gallery to sample The Wild Geese.

‘Clean, smooth, summery and rich’ – James Leavey Tries The Wild Geese

‘Clean, smooth, subtle, summery, rich, well balanced and body this is whiskey’s equivalent to Elle Macpherson’

You guessed it – our multi award winning Single Malt according to James Leavey.

James Leavey is an important name in the media industry. As a freelance writer and journalist, his famous comical style has been found in the pages of many British newspapers, including the Independent, the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mirror, the Daily Express and the Sunday Express. He has also appeared on BBC Radio Four, BBC 2 and Channel 4.

Last month he met The Wild Geese Collection and sparked a beautiful relationship.

The Classic Blend
‘The first bottle I tried was the Classic Blend, which lived up to its name. It was sweet and light and delicate and not over-honeyed, somewhat like lying in a field of wild flowers and clover on a hot summer’s day, enjoying the heady scent and listening to the bees’

The Rare Irish

‘Then I gave the Rare Irish a twirl round my tonsils and it was so smooth and perfectly balanced, with a touch of citrus and the teeniest taste of honey and lasted so long and so lovely, I almost died with delight. It was a beautiful rare whiskey, indeed, and worth waiting a lifetime for’

The Single Malt

‘Clean, smooth, subtle, summery, rich, well balanced and a body that is whiskey’s equivalent to Elle Macpherson’

The Limited Edition
‘Finally came the turn of the Limited Edition, which like its three siblings was one of the nicest and most perfectly balanced Irish whiskeys I have ever tasted, but, like them, with is own distinct character. Smooth, sweet then spicy, light and stunning’

We’re thrilled that James liked the Collection so much, and hope that he continues to enjoy The Wild Geese.

Tip O’Neill Award Recipient Niall O’Dowd Presented With A Bottle of The Wild Geese Irish Whiskey

September was beckoned in to the sound of Irish celebration. Friday 7th September marked the first Tip O’Neill Award, received by Niall O’Dowd, who was also presented with a bottle of The Wild Geese Limited Edition Irish Whiskey.

The award has been established to commemorate the life and achievements of US Speaker Tip O’Neill and celebrate the achievements of members of the diaspora who exceed expectations in the their chosen field. Much like Tip O’Neill did.

O’Neill fought for the Irish diaspora in the United States, by encouraging migration to the country, where Irish people could enjoy the same opportunities that he had experienced – to be the best that you can be. He served as Speaker of the US House of Representatives for ten years.

Eighty Irish Americans, all relatives of Tip O’Neill travelled Home to Ireland to see the award given to Niall O’Dowd, founder of The Irish Voice newspaper and The Irish American magazine, whose broad support for the Irish both at home and in the US has often been undocumented. These Wild Geese met in Buncrana, where Tip O’Neill’s grandmother was born.

The Wild Geese Legend is a story of ‘Home’.

When Patrick Sarsfield and his followers were defeated at The Battle of The Boyne, they negotiated fair terms for the Irish people. Although they would live under foreign rule, they would be free. The condition: Sarsfeild and his followers must leave Ireland. With their heads held high, they marched to the shores of Limerick, where they met ships that would take them to Europe.

They took the name The Wild Geese in the hope and belief that this would be a temporary strategic exile in Europe.

Tragically Sarsfeild and many of The Wild Geese did not see Home again, but today Wild Geese from all corners of the world share Sarsfield’s dream of seeing Ireland. There are thought to be 80 million people of Irish descent in the world today, 50 million of which live in the USA. Ceremonies like the Tip O’Neill Award remind us of this eternal connection and what the diaspora can achieve.

One relative, Susan O’Neill fully appreciated this:

‘Coming here is like coming home. Tip’s grandmother Eunice Fullerton was born just outside Buncrana so we still see this place as home.’

‘When you’re an Irish-American, you never forget your Irish roots because it means so much about what we are and who we are’

The Wild Geese whiskey is extremely proud to have been a part of this occasion. Buncrana born Denis Grant presented both Niall O’Dowd and Tip’s son Thomas P. O’Neill III with a bottle of our superb whiskey, as a reminder of that special thing that unites us – ‘Home

Wherever you are in the world, if you are of Irish descent you are part of this story and entitled to call yourself Wild Geese
