The Beginning’

Ireland was torn by injustice and natural disaster.

The soldiers and refugees who were forced to set sail
on ships for other lands became know as
The Wild Geese.

Through oppression and famine they created a beautiful dream
Freedom for Everyone.

Men of Action: Arthur Staggs, War Hero and Secret Agent

Last week, the streets of a small British town called Halton was lined with people celebrating the achievements of a Second World War veteran.

The Duchess of Cornwall met Flt Lt Arthur Staggs on a trip to the town. Now 99 years old, Arthur was a secret agent in German-occupied France.

He trained as a radio operator, and was parachuted into Northern France by Special Operations Executive. He had to hide equipment from the enemy as he travelled around France. On his journeys, he even befriended a German officer.

He eventually worked with the French Resistance, but was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Loos prison. There, he was tortured and interrogated for two months.

Upon his release, a German officer refused to believe Arthur was a secret agent.

‘The German officer who released me laughed at the idea anyone would believe I was an English spy,’ remembers Arthur. ‘I wish I could have gone back when the war ended and told him he had made a mistake’.

We love the heroic actions of Arthur and join the Duchess in honouring him. Like The Wild Geese, he was relentless in his pursuit of doing the right thing.
